In Bourgogne, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are only the beginning. The label's place name matters just as much, moving from regional Bourgogne to village, premier cru and grand cru.

Chablis brings a cooler, limestone-led Chardonnay. The Côte de Nuits runs through Gevrey-Chambertin, Chambolle-Musigny and Vosne-Romanée, while the Côte de Beaune includes Puligny-Montrachet, Meursault, Pommard and Volnay. South of the Côte d'Or, the Côte Chalonnaise follows the same village pattern. The Mâconnais brings a warmer Chardonnay style, with Pouilly-Fuissé as a key name. In Bourgogne, the more specific the place name, the more the bottle can tell you.
