The Producer

The vines at Domaine Didier Desvignes are farmed with low yields, biodiversity and green harvesting. Based in Villié-Morgon, the domaine works across Morgon, Brouilly, Moulin-à-Vent, Chiroubles, Fleurie and Beaujolais. The Desvignes family represents six generations of winemaking tradition.

All wines are estate bottled, certified organic and made with minimal intervention. Sulfur use is minimal or often absent. Oak barrels are used for malolactic fermentation to provide depth and complexity. Malolactic fermentation converts sharper malic acid into softer lactic acid, while the barrel provides the setting for the depth and complexity named in the cellar approach.

Place

Villié-Morgon is in the Rhône department of France. Beaujolais red wine is associated with Gamay, the region's principal red grape, while the appellation names divide the local geography into defined label categories.

Morgon, Brouilly, Moulin-à-Vent, Chiroubles and Fleurie are cru appellations, each tied to a named Beaujolais place. Beaujolais is the broader regional appellation. The range therefore includes both cru and regional addresses, with the place name on the bottle identifying the category of origin.

Wines

The red range includes Brouilly Naturément, Morgon Les Charmes and Terre de Manganèse Didier Desvignes Vigneron, with La Voûte Saint-Vincent as another Morgon bottling. Brouilly Naturément is made with whole clusters, fermented for six to seven days without added sulfur and aged in tank without added sulfur. Whole cluster fermentation leaves the stems with the grapes, while tank ageing keeps the wine in a vessel without oak during that stage.

Terre de Manganèse Didier Desvignes Vigneron puts fruit at the center. La Voûte Saint-Vincent shows wild cherry, cassis, dark earth, roast game and a whisper of smoke, with concentration and clarity.

Beaujolais Blanc Élevé en fût de chêne is the separate white wine in the range. Its name identifies a white Beaujolais wine raised in oak barrels. The bottles therefore cover several Beaujolais place names, whole cluster fermentation, tank ageing without added sulfur, a Morgon wine with darker earthy notes and a separate oak raised white.

Final Word

Domaine Didier Desvignes carries the impression of terroir from vineyard to bottle with as little intervention as possible.
