The Producer
Domaine Leflaive places Puligny Montrachet Chardonnay at the centre of its estate wines, while Esprit Leflaive extends the name into red and white Burgundy through selected grower partnerships. The domaine's own vineyards include premier cru and grand cru parcels, with Montrachet as its named grand cru wine.
The Leflaive family established roots in Puligny Montrachet with Claude Leflaive in 1717. The domaine became a pioneer of biodynamic viticulture in Burgundy, using methods based on natural and ecological principles and respect for fauna and flora. Esprit Leflaive adds a separate négociant range to the estate's white Burgundy base.
Place
Puligny Montrachet belongs to the Côte de Beaune, where Chardonnay occupies the estate vineyards. Esprit Leflaive also works across the Côte de Nuits, Chablis and the Mâconnais, so the range moves between white and red wines, different appellations and different regional settings.
In Burgundy, premier cru and grand cru identify vineyard levels on the label. Grand cru names the highest vineyard classification, while premier cru identifies the tier below it. Domaine Leflaive's Puligny holdings include both levels, while Esprit Leflaive includes Pommard, Beaune, Nuits Saint Georges and Corton among its red Burgundy addresses.
The move from Puligny to the Côte de Nuits changes the grape and colour of the wine. Puligny is represented through Chardonnay, while the named red wines use Pinot Noir, with Corton Grand Cru Les Grandes Lolières providing a grand cru red within the Esprit range.
Soil And Site
Montrachet has clay limestone soil and was planted in 1960. Clay limestone combines fine particles with carbonate stone, holding moisture while allowing excess water to drain. For Chardonnay, that balance can support ripe fruit alongside firm acidity, with the stone contributing a mineral feel to the finished wine.
Story
Claude Leflaive took up residence in Puligny Montrachet in 1717 and cultivated several acres of vineyards. The family remained tied to the village as the modern domaine developed, keeping Puligny at the centre of the estate's white wines.
Domaine Leflaive made biodynamic farming its working method, with the conversion total since 1996. The approach follows natural and ecological principles and respects the balance of fauna and flora across the vineyards. The range widened in 2018 when Domaine Leflaive launched Esprit Leflaive, a négociant venture reaching beyond the Côte de Beaune and the Mâconnais to Chablis and the Côte de Nuits.
Vineyards And Cellar
Domaine Leflaive holds 24 hectares in Puligny Montrachet, including 4.8 hectares of grand cru and 10.8 hectares of premier cru. All of these holdings are planted to Chardonnay.
Montrachet receives long, gentle pneumatic pressing followed by decanting over 24 hours. Fermentation and malolactic fermentation take place in oak casks. The wine then ages 12 months in oak barrels on lees and 10 months in stainless steel on fine lees. Lees ageing keeps fine yeast material in contact with the wine, adding texture while the final period in steel preserves freshness.
The vinification follows a philosophy of respect, with long natural fermentations in the purest Burgundy tradition. Esprit Leflaive sources grapes from selected growers, often working with very old vines. Domaine staff harvest the grapes and vinify them in the Puligny Montrachet cellar. Corton Grand Cru Les Grandes Lolières is organic Pinot Noir, aged 15 months in oak followed by three months in stainless steel.
Wines
The estate range centres on white Burgundy from Puligny Montrachet, including Montrachet Grand Cru and the domaine's other Chardonnay appellations. Esprit Leflaive forms the broader négociant range, with wines from the Côte de Beaune, Côte de Nuits, Chablis and Mâconnais.
The red Burgundy selection runs from Pommard Premier Cru Les Arvelets and Beaune Premier Cru Les Tuvilains to Nuits Saint Georges and Corton Grand Cru Les Grandes Lolières. The labels move from village and premier cru addresses to a named grand cru wine. The white Esprit range follows the same wider regional sourcing through appellations beyond Puligny Montrachet.
In The Glass
Corton Grand Cru Les Grandes Lolières combines cherry, strawberry, sandalwood, earth and woodsy underbrush aromas with energy and fine concentration. Crisp tannins give the wine a smooth, silky feel, while the finish remains firm and well integrated. Rose notes add an aromatic lift to the density of the wine.
Pommard Premier Cru Les Arvelets has beautiful fruitiness, a certain nerviness, fine tannins and gentle extraction. Its fruit remains fresh and refined despite the wine's strength, with a balanced palate that is expressive now and capable of ageing. Beaune Premier Cru Les Tuvilains brings wild strawberry fruit, while mature tannins add density and support longevity.
Nuits Saint Georges shows crushed black fruits with fine tannins, floral notes, sandalwood, strawberry and Eastern spice. The palate is supple and balanced, with the aromatic profile and tannin quality associated with the Côte de Nuits.
A Bottle To Understand It
Choose Corton Grand Cru Les Grandes Lolières. It is the Esprit line's grand cru red, placing a named Corton address beside the range's village and premier cru bottles. The wine is organic Pinot Noir from the négociant venture, with grapes sourced through grower partnerships and vinified in the Puligny Montrachet cellar. The bottle presents Esprit Leflaive as a Burgundy range that includes a classified red vineyard alongside its broader regional wines.
Anecdote
In 1905, Joseph Leflaive, a former naval engineer, acquired 25 hectares in Burgundy during the post phylloxera downturn, when vineyard land was selling cheaply. The purchase established the modern Domaine Leflaive. The family name already had roots in Puligny Montrachet, but Joseph's acquisition created the larger estate that carried the domaine into the twentieth century.
Final Word
Domaine Leflaive joins Chardonnay vineyards in Puligny Montrachet with Esprit Leflaive wines sourced across Burgundy. Its range runs from Montrachet Grand Cru to red Burgundy from Pommard, Beaune, Nuits Saint Georges and Corton.
