The Producer
Jean Jacques Mélinand founded Domaine des Marrans in 1970 by acquiring four hectares of vines in Fleurie. The vineyard later grew to approximately 20 hectares. Mathieu Mélinand joined the family domaine in 2008. After two years working in Australia and New Zealand, he returned to Fleurie and became proprietor in 2009. His brother Camille joined the domaine in 2019.
The red wines come from old vine Gamay on crystalline granite sites. The cellar uses semi carbonic maceration with whole clusters and indigenous yeasts. Sulfur is banned throughout vinification, and the approach is minimal intervention. Organic viticulture began in 2021, with the full vineyard certified from the 2024 vintage.
Place
Domaine des Marrans is based in Fleurie, within Beaujolais. The red wines carry Fleurie in their names, while the white is labeled Beaujolais Blanc Chardonnay. The range therefore separates by place and grape, with Fleurie attached to the reds and Chardonnay named directly on the white label.
Wines
The range includes two Fleurie reds, including Fleurie Les Marrans Domaine des Marrans, and one white, Beaujolais Blanc Chardonnay Domaine des Marrans. The reds belong to the domaine's old vine Gamay range, while the white is Chardonnay.
The cru wines are aged in cement vats and large wooden foudres for approximately twelve months. Across the old vine Gamay wines, the style is pure and fresh, with grain and spice alongside a fleshy character and juicy fruit.
Final Word
Domaine des Marrans is a Fleurie family domaine with old vine Gamay reds, a Chardonnay white, whole cluster fermentation, crystalline granite sites and organic farming.
