The Producer
Rigorous vineyard management and indigenous fermentation define Domaine Fontaine-Gagnard. The domaine encompasses 12 hectares, primarily in Chassagne-Montrachet, with additional parcels in Volnay and Pommard. Frédéric joined in 2018 to develop viticulture and winemaking expertise. Oak sourcing is chosen for purity and refinement in the finished wines.
Place
The holdings are concentrated in Chassagne-Montrachet, then extend into Volnay and Pommard. The three villages give the range a spread of Burgundy appellations, from Village wines to Premier Cru and Grand Cru wines. These terms mark vineyard levels, with Grand Cru the highest classification. Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet is the domaine's named grand cru.
Wines
The portfolio spans 22 appellations and moves from Village wines to Premier and Grand Crus. Fermentation uses indigenous yeasts, followed by 12 to 18 months in French oak barrels. New oak is adjusted by appellation level, at 15 to 20 percent for Village wines and 30 to 40 percent for Premier and Grand Crus. Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet is the named grand cru bottle in the range; the 2022 wine carries 14% alcohol.
Final Word
The domaine's range runs from village appellations to Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet, with indigenous yeast fermentation and French oak ageing throughout. New oak rises with the vineyard classification.
