The Producer
Domaine de Héritieres Louis Jadot is a Louis Jadot sub-brand carrying two Côte de Beaune reds. Corton-Pougets Grand Cru is made from Pinot Noir, while Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru Clos de la Croix de Pierre is a single-vineyard Premier Cru red. Grand Cru and Premier Cru are Burgundy vineyard ranks, with Grand Cru at the top.
The Jadot family had been involved in Burgundy wine production since immigrating from Belgium, and Louis Henry Denis Jadot later founded Maison Louis Jadot. The family sold the brand to the Kopf family of the Kobrand Company.
Place
Both named wines come from the Côte de Beaune. Corton-Pougets sits on the mid and upper slopes adjacent to Le Charlemagne, where varied soils of chalk and iron-rich marl run through the vineyard. Pernand-Vergelesses carries Premier Cru status, while Corton-Pougets carries Grand Cru status.
The slope and ground give Corton-Pougets a clearly defined vineyard setting. Pernand-Vergelesses brings a separate named site at a lower level of Burgundy's vineyard hierarchy, with its own bottle development and cellar path.
Wines
The range contains two red wines. Corton-Pougets Grand Cru is made from Pinot Noir, fermented in vats for up to four weeks and matured in oak barrels for 18 to 20 months. It is held for at least five years in bottle before opening and develops for 15 to 20 years in the cellar.
Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru Clos de la Croix de Pierre is the single-vineyard Premier Cru bottling. Its fruit is fermented in tanks and the wine is matured in oak barrels for about 15 months before bottling. It develops in bottle for five to eight years.
In The Glass
Corton-Pougets brings deep, layered berry and oak aromas, rich fruit and a persistent finish. Pernand-Vergelesses opens with ripe black berry aromas that develop into supple tannins before a long finish.
The two wines differ in their palate shape. Corton-Pougets carries dense fruit and oak through a persistent close, while Pernand-Vergelesses moves from ripe fruit into softer tannins and length.
A Bottle To Understand It
Choose Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru Clos de la Croix de Pierre. It is a single-vineyard red from the Premier Cru level, with tank fermentation followed by oak maturation before bottling. The bottle gives the range a defined parcel and a direct view of the Côte de Beaune below the Grand Cru tier.
Final Word
Domaine de Héritieres Louis Jadot places Pinot Noir beside two Côte de Beaune vineyard ranks, from Corton-Pougets Grand Cru to Pernand-Vergelesses Premier Cru Clos de la Croix de Pierre.
