The Producer
Élodie Roy grew up in a winemaking family. In 2018, at age 38, she took control of the family domaine, which comprises 24 acres of vines in good condition. Before that, she worked closely with Anne Gros at Domaine Anne Gros in Vosne-Romanée for 11 years.
Place
Cheilly-les-Maranges sits at the southern edge of the Côte de Beaune. The domaine's labels move from Bourgogne Pinot Noir and Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune to Maranges and Santenay 1er Cru.
These appellation names place the wines at different geographic levels within Burgundy. Bourgogne identifies a regional category, while Maranges names a village appellation and Santenay 1er Cru adds the premier cru designation within Santenay.
Wines
Roy vinifies white and red wines from Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Aligoté. The named range includes Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune Blanc, Bourgogne Hautes Côtes de Beaune Rouge, Maranges 'La Rue des Pierres', and Santenay 1er Cru 'Les Gravieres'.
The two Hautes Côtes wines are separated by colour, while the Maranges and Santenay bottles carry named cuvée titles within their appellations. Bourgogne Pinot Noir provides a regional red wine, and the range also includes both white and red expressions from the Hautes Côtes de Beaune.
Final Word
Roy's domaine joins family vineyard inheritance to organic farming. One parcel contains 70 year old vines planted by her grandfather, while chemicals have been eliminated, the soils are plowed, and natural grassing is used in the plots.
