The Rhône splits clearly in two. In the north, the valley is narrow and steep, with granite slopes, Syrah for reds, and Viognier, Marsanne and Roussanne for whites. Syrah is the only red grape in Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Cornas, Saint-Joseph and Crozes-Hermitage. Condrieu is known for perfumed Viognier. South of Montélimar, the valley opens into warmer country, where Grenache leads blends with Syrah, Mourvèdre and other grapes. Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras and Tavel range from ripe reds to rosé.
