The Producer
Château Mont-Redon is a Rhône estate with red and white wines from Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes du Rhône and Lirac. Its named Châteauneuf-du-Pape red is Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape. The range also includes Mont-Redon Côtes du Rhône Réserve Rouge, Château Mont-Redon Lirac, Mont-Redon Côtes du Rhône Réserve Blanc and Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc.
Henri Plantin acquired the property in 1923, before the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation was created in 1936. The estate is now run by the fourth generation of the Plantin family through the Abeille-Fabre heirs, with Pierre Fabre as winemaker.
Place
The range follows three Rhône appellations. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the estate's principal address, while Côtes-du-Rhône and Lirac provide separate appellation names for other bottles. The estate acquired its Côtes-du-Rhône vineyard in 1980 and its Lirac vineyard in 1997.
The Châteauneuf-du-Pape property includes plateau pebbles, safres, which are compact sand, and urgonian limestones. These ground types differ in drainage and heat retention, giving the vines several physical conditions for ripening and giving the wines a range of site influences within one appellation.
Wines
The red range includes Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Mont-Redon Côtes du Rhône Réserve Rouge and Château Mont-Redon Lirac. Approximately half of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape red and one third of the Lirac are barrel aged in 20% new oak for 12 months before being blended back into tank.
The white range includes Mont-Redon Côtes du Rhône Réserve Blanc and Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc. The appellation names separate the bottles by source, while the red and white wines give the estate two distinct styles within the range.
In The Glass
The Châteauneuf-du-Pape red shows dark fruit, a silky texture and a supple, refined finish. The texture gives the wine a smooth presence through the palate, while the finish keeps its refined character.
The white wines are vinified in stainless steel and aged on fine lees for 5 months without malolactic conversion. The ageing method preserves acidity and keeps the white wines' cellar treatment clearly separate from the red programme.
A Bottle To Understand It
Choose Château Mont-Redon Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It is the estate's red bottle named for the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, distinct from Mont-Redon Côtes du Rhône Réserve Rouge and Château Mont-Redon Lirac. The full producer and appellation name appear together on the label, placing the wine directly within the estate's principal Rhône address.
Final Word
Château Mont-Redon joins a Châteauneuf-du-Pape estate with red and white wines carrying the names Côtes du Rhône and Lirac, under the management of the fourth Plantin generation.
