Who makes it

Domaine Brusset devotes 20 hectares to Gigondas, with Gigondas Les Hauts de Montmirail at the centre of the documented red range. The wine carries the Gigondas appellation and blends 55% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 25% Mourvèdre. Its dark fruit, silky tannins, partial oak ageing and limestone-derived saltiness connect the label to both the grape blend and the slopes behind it.

The estate also holds organic certification under the BIO label, certified by Certipaq BIO FR-BIO-09. That certification sits alongside a range that moves from a deep, fruit-rich Gigondas red to a more concentrated reserve, a spiced Cairanne blend, and a white wine with a round opening and dry finish.

Where it grows

Gigondas vineyards occupy steep terraces along the Dentelles de Montmirail limestone massif. The southern exposure is part of the physical setting named for the estate's main vineyards, while the wine shows the site in a more tactile form: Les Hauts de Montmirail carries mineral saltiness beside black and blueberry fruit.

Cairanne Les Travers places the same producer in a different appellation and blend. Its 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Carignan and 10% Mourvèdre composition leads toward blackberry, cherry, leather, pepper and spice. The label change brings a different aromatic register, not merely another name for the Gigondas wine.

How it is made

The cellar

Organic certification places the vineyard work under the BIO label, certified by Certipaq BIO FR-BIO-09. In the cellar, the wines receive no chemical inputs during vinification apart from a minuscule dose of sulphur at bottling. The documented method leaves the wines to express fruit, tannin, oak and limestone saltiness without a list of added cellar treatments.

Partial oak ageing contributes sweeter notes to Les Hauts de Montmirail, where silky tannins and mineral saltiness keep the fruit from becoming one-dimensional. In the reserve, the reported aim is a close meeting of wood and fruit, with immense depth and concentration instead of overtly separate oak flavour.

What they make

Gigondas Les Hauts de Montmirail is a red blend of 55% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 25% Mourvèdre. It is very deep and dark crimson, with rich black and blueberry flavours. Silky tannins provide the palate’s shape, while partial oak ageing adds sweeter notes beside the salty mineral character linked to limestone.

The reserve Les Hauts de Montmirail occupies a more concentrated position in the range. Its defining cues are immense depth, dense fruit and a close balance between wood and fruit. No separate blend breakdown or quantified oak regime is established for this bottle, so its distinction rests on concentration and the handling of oak.

Wines to try

First bottle

Gigondas Les Hauts de Montmirail is the first bottle to open. It is a red Gigondas blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre from the estate’s steep limestone terraces, with the fullest documented link between place, composition and taste. In the glass, expect a very deep crimson colour, black and blueberry fruit, silky tannins, sweeter notes from partial oak ageing and a salty mineral finish. It brings the estate’s main vineyard place and cellar choices into one bottle without requiring the reserve’s greater concentration as a starting point.
