The Producer
Before Romain Roche's succession in 2009, his family had held the vineyards for seven generations, while the crop was sold to the cooperative. The domaine started with 15 hectares in 2009 and expanded to 25 hectares in 2014 when his father retired. Romain also built the winery. He has worked without herbicides from the outset and has been organically certified since 2022. Harvest is manual, allowing the best grapes to be selected, while limited oenological inputs let the terroir express itself.
Place
Cairanne is the appellation attached to Domaine Roche's red wine. The appellation name supplies the place on the label, while red identifies the wine's style. The domaine's Cairanne wines include recorded 2018 and 2019 vintages, alongside the listed 2021 bottle.
Wines
Cairanne Domaine Roche is a red wine from the Cairanne appellation, listed as the 2021 vintage. The domaine's 2018 and 2019 vintages are also recorded. The 2019 vintage is generous but not unbalanced, giving the named wine a clear vintage presence within the range.
In The Glass
The 2018 vintage opens with fresh aromatics of ripe strawberry and plum, with a hint of green. Its supple palate brings dried herbs, white pepper and sleek ripe autumnal fruit.
The 2019 vintage is ripe, lush and sweetly fruited, with cherries and berries followed by a slight salty edge. Olive and spice add savoury detail, while the finish has grip. The wine is beginning to soften and open, with some age taking it in the right direction.
A Bottle To Understand It
Choose Cairanne Domaine Roche 2021. It is the named red Cairanne wine in its listed vintage, keeping the first bottle focused on one producer, one appellation and one style. The 2018 and 2019 vintages then provide older points of comparison for the same named wine.
Final Word
Domaine Roche moved its family vineyards from cooperative sales to an independently run Cairanne domaine under Romain Roche, with manual harvest and organic certification since 2022.
