The Producer

Domaines & Châteaux de Sade is the producer name. Maison de Sade is also used for the wines. The Sade family traces its origins to Provence around Avignon since 1348, while the wine range draws partly from its own vineyards and partly from selected contracted partner growers.

In 1415, Emperor Sigismond, King of Luxembourg, granted the imperial eagle to the family coat of arms in recognition of Elzéar de Sade. That family history sits alongside a Rhône Valley selection that includes Côtes du Rhône reds and refreshing whites.

Place

The range spans the Rhône Valley from its northern appellations to Luberon in the south. The Côtes du Rhône name appears on Divin Marquis Cuvée Exceptionnelle and Marquis de Sade, while the wider selection covers both southern Rhône reds and lighter white wines.

The Sade family owns historic châteaux at Lacoste, Saumane de Vaucluse and Mazan. Lacoste dates to the 11th century, Saumane de Vaucluse to the 12th century, and Mazan was built around 1720.

Wines

The Côtes du Rhône range includes the standard Marquis de Sade release and the distinct Divin Marquis Cuvée Exceptionnelle variant. Divin Marquis Cuvée Exceptionnelle 2020 is made from 60% Grenache, 35% Syrah and 5% Mourvèdre, with an alcohol level of 16.5%.

The standard Marquis de Sade Côtes du Rhône has a maintained ruby appearance. Beyond the red wines, the range includes full bodied reds from the southern Rhône and light, refreshing whites.

Final Word

At Château Saumane de Vaucluse, the Marquis de Sade lived from ages 5 to 10. Secret corridors and dungeons were discovered in the château.
