The Producer

Stéphane Usseglio took sole control of the domaine in 1999 at age 22 and produced his first vintage that year. His father Raymond had founded Domaine Raymond Usseglio with Danielle in 1963. The estate works across Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Côtes du Rhône and IGP vines, with biodynamic methods used across the Châteauneuf holdings. At the domaine, biodynamics centres on respect for the earth and natural cycles. All wines carry Demeter and Biodyvin organic and biodynamic certification labels.

Place

The Châteauneuf-du-Pape holding has 18 hectares of vines, including 3 hectares planted to white wine varieties. About 50% of the Châteauneuf vines are in La Crau; the rest lie close to the ancient castle of the Pope. The domaine also owns 5 hectares in Côtes du Rhône and 3 hectares classified as IGP. Most of the vines average 60 years old, and some exceed 100 years.

Wines

The range includes Châteauneuf-du-Pape reds and whites, Côtes du Rhône wines and IGP wines. Les Claux 2023 is a Côtes du Rhône red made from 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 20% Mourvèdre. La Part des Anges ages 80% in French oak barrels. Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines have a soft, sweet and spicy character, with red and dark red peppery berry notes.

Final Word

Domaine Raymond Usseglio & Fils works from biodynamic Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards into Côtes du Rhône and IGP wines, with Les Claux 2023 made from Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre.
