The Producer

Before his own domaine existed, Pierre Gaillard worked at Guigal and helped plant the first vines used in La Turque. He and Pascale moved to Malleval in 1981. Domaine Pierre Gaillard was formally founded in 1986 with 0.25 hectares.

Gaillard studied viticulture and enology in Beaune and Montpellier. He now works closely with his three adult children. All vineyard work uses organic farming methods, and the operation holds HVE3 certification for high environmental standards.

Place

Malleval is the home base for a Northern Rhône operation spread across multiple estates. The core vineyards occupy the Northern Rhône Valley's steepest hillsides.

Condrieu brings Viognier from steep granite slopes, while Côte-Rôtie provides red wines. Each appellation gives the range a different grape and colour, with Condrieu representing the white side and Côte-Rôtie the red.

Wines

The range includes Condrieu Viognier and Côte-Rôtie red wines. The 2020 Côte-Rôtie shows wild red fruits, redcurrants, strawberry jam, raspberry leaf and violets, with extended ageing potential.

Red wines age 18 to 20 months in 50 to 70% new French oak. Since 2012, small clay amphora vessels have been used to vinify a small portion of the wines alongside traditional methods.

Final Word

Domaine Pierre Gaillard is a Malleval domaine with organic vineyard work, parcel by parcel vinification, and red wines aged in French oak. Its range joins Condrieu Viognier with Côte-Rôtie reds from the Northern Rhône.
