The Loire runs almost 1,000 kilometres from the Atlantic coast to the Massif Central. It is one wine region on the map, but its four sub-regions have different grapes, soils and styles.
Centre-Loire is known for Sauvignon Blanc, led by Sancerre and Pouilly-Fume, with Menetou-Salon, Reuilly and Quincy alongside them. Touraine brings Cabernet Franc in Chinon, Bourgueil and Saumur-Champigny, plus Chenin Blanc in Vouvray and Montlouis. Anjou-Saumur takes Chenin from dry Savennières to the sweet wines of the Layon valley and Quarts de Chaume, while Saumur adds sparkling wine and Cabernet Franc. At the Atlantic end, Pays Nantais makes Muscadet from Melon de Bourgogne on granite and gneiss.
