Around Nantes, vineyards lie near the Atlantic. Farther inland are Anjou-Saumur and Touraine, followed by the Centre-Loire vineyards around Sancerre and Pouilly-sur-Loire. The climate becomes less oceanic inland, and the grapes change between these areas.
Muscadet, Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc
Grapes and styles
Muscadet is a white wine named after its appellation, or defined place of origin, rather than its grape. It is made from Melon de Bourgogne in the Pays Nantais near the Atlantic. Muscadet Sèvre et Maine is the largest and most familiar subregional appellation. Sur lie on the label refers to rules for keeping the wine in contact with lees, the yeast sediment left after fermentation, before bottling. The communal crus identify smaller origins and generally require longer ageing.
Anjou-Saumur has a wider range. Chenin Blanc makes dry wines in places such as Anjou and Saumur, sweet wines in the Layon appellations, and sparkling wine in Saumur and Crémant de Loire. Cabernet Franc is the main grape in reds such as Saumur-Champigny. Grolleau and Cabernet grapes also contribute to the area's rosés. The local tuffeau limestone is visible in vineyards, buildings and underground cellars used for ageing wine.
Touraine and the Centre-Loire
Background
In Touraine, Vouvray and Montlouis-sur-Loire make Chenin Blanc wines that can be dry, sweet or sparkling. Chinon, Bourgueil and Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil are closely tied to Cabernet Franc. The broader Touraine appellation and its geographic denominations also use Sauvignon Blanc, Gamay, Côt, the local name for Malbec, and other grapes.
A long stretch of river and countryside separates Centre-Loire from the western wine areas. Sancerre, Pouilly-Fumé, Menetou-Salon, Quincy and Reuilly make Sauvignon Blanc whites. Several Centre-Loire appellations also make red and rosé from Pinot Noir. Pouilly-sur-Loire and Pouilly-Fumé are easy names to confuse: the former uses Chasselas, the latter Sauvignon Blanc.
Dry whites, reds and sparkling wine
Everyday bottles
Muscadet and Touraine Sauvignon are options for a fresh, dry white. For red wine, look for Cabernet Franc from Anjou, Saumur or Touraine. Rosé can be dry or noticeably sweet, so check the specific appellation and sweetness description.
Sparkling wine is a substantial part of the middle Loire. Crémant de Loire can be made in defined areas of Anjou-Saumur and Touraine; Saumur and Vouvray also have their own sparkling categories. The appellation tells you which grapes are permitted. Dosage, the addition of wine and sugar before final corking, also influences the finished style.
Chenin Blanc and sweetness
What sets it apart
Chenin Blanc makes wines across a wide range of sweetness. Vouvray may be still or sparkling, dry or sweet. The Layon appellations are known for sweet wines, while Saumur Blanc and Anjou Blanc offer dry examples. Chenin's acidity gives mouth-watering freshness and helps balance sweetness; it can also support long bottle ageing.
Sweetness wording varies by appellation. Sec indicates dry, demi-sec is sweeter, moelleux is sweet, and doux is sweeter still. Check the producer's description if the label leaves you unsure, particularly when choosing a Vouvray or Montlouis-sur-Loire.
Place names and grape names
Read the label
Read the appellation together with the wine's colour. White Sancerre is made from Sauvignon Blanc, but Sancerre also makes red and rosé from Pinot Noir. Chinon red is based chiefly on Cabernet Franc. Vouvray names a Chenin Blanc wine whose sweetness and still or sparkling style need checking separately.
Sur lie on Muscadet describes a regulated part of production. It is neither a grape nor a separate appellation. The producer and vintage, or harvest year, then distinguish the particular bottle within that appellation.
Choosing a Loire wine

For a dry white, try Muscadet, Touraine Sauvignon or a Chenin Blanc labelled sec. Chinon or Saumur-Champigny introduces Cabernet Franc if you prefer red wine. For bubbles, look for Crémant de Loire or a sparkling Saumur.
