Red grapes outnumber white grapes in Burgenland, Austria's only major wine area where that is true. Blaufränkisch, St. Laurent and Zweigelt lead the way. The region's core reds often bring spice and mineral notes, lively acidity and medium tannin.
Its DAC names make the range easier to read. Mittelburgenland and Eisenberg are linked with Blaufränkisch, Neusiedlersee with Zweigelt, and Leithaberg with Blaufränkisch and white wines. Neusiedlersee is also Austria's most important sweet-wine region. Lake Neusiedl stores heat and shapes its microclimate; regional producers say the lake's winds and salt can be found in the wines.
Leithaberg carries minerality through both reds and whites, while Eisenberg added Welschriesling to its DAC in 2023. Uhudler is a southern Burgenland specialty. The region's sweet-wine export trade was also caught up in the 1985 glycol scandal that became a turning point in Austria's wine crisis.
