The Producer
Wine has been part of the Strehn family story for four generations. Great grandfather Karl Strehn, a Deutschkreutz mayor, mason and farmer, tended vines and made wine for family consumption. The vineyards later belonged to a mixed farming operation, until Monika Strehn shifted the business entirely to winemaking during the 1980s.
Since 2012, Pia, Andy and Patrick Strehn have run the estate and jointly manage roughly fifty hectares of organically farmed vineyards. The winery identifies its organic control body with the code AT-BIO-402.
Place
Blaufränkisch is at home in Mittelburgenland, where Strehn works from vineyards in Deutschkreutz and Neckenmarkt. The vineyards cover varied soils across the two locations. Deutschkreutz supplies the red varieties used as the base for the rosé range, with Blaufränkisch in the lead.
Wines
The rosé range contains six wines, extending from sparkling wine to still rosé and the barrel fermented Love Story rosé. B. Pink is a rosé brut whose sales support breast cancer prevention.
Blaufränkisch is the principal grape, while Zweigelt, St. Laurent, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah are used in cuvées. Strehn Elefant im Porzellanladen shows blood orange, vineyard peach, Bourbon vanilla and herbs. It is full bodied, juicy and round, with intense fruit and a long finish. A large Burgundy glass suits the wine.
Final Word
In 2021, 90 percent of Strehn's harvest was processed into rosé.
