The Producer
The Nittnaus family traces its winemaking tradition back more than 300 years. Today, brothers Hans Michael and Andreas both work in the vineyards. Hans Michael carries primary responsibility for the wines' style and expression in the cellar, while Andreas handles sales and represents the estate at tastings.
The range spans red, white and dessert wines, with an emphasis on Burgenland fruit character. The winery applies its own compost to improve vineyard soils. The compost supports soil microorganisms, vineyard vitality and biodiversity.
Green plants and wild herbs are maintained between the rows to limit erosion and provide habitat. The estate also uses leguminous cover plants whose associated bacteria collect atmospheric nitrogen and make it available to the vines.
Wines
The percentage breakdown for the 2024 Beerenauslese Exquisit gives 40% Weißburgunder, 30% Welschriesling and 30% Scheurebe. Selectively hand-picked whole bunches are pressed, then fermentation is arrested through cooling and filtration. The wine ages in stainless steel and carries 5.4 g/l acidity and 172.1 g/l residual sugar.
Visibly viscous and yellow-straw in colour, the 2024 has peach and tropical-fruit aromas. Its palate is rich, sweet and medium-bodied, with balanced acidity and an intensely fruity finish.
Nittnaus Beerenauslese Exquisite 2021 is a separate five-grape wine: 75% Scheurebe, 10% Welschriesling, 5% Grüner Veltliner, 5% Muskat Ottonel and 5% Sauvignon Blanc. It is fruity, very sweet and fresh, with apricot jam, yellow pear, mimosa, orange and honey.
