La Mancha has broad, flat, dry vineyards and a history of winegrowing reaching back to the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. Ribera del Guadiana, in Extremadura near Portugal, is a protected wine region with six subzones.

La Mancha and Ribera del Guadiana are separate Spanish wine areas included in the Central Plateau grouping. La Mancha spreads across broad, flat, dry ground, with large seasonal temperature shifts, limited rainfall and long sunshine hours. Its documented vineyard history reaches the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, and many producers were established after 1940. Ribera del Guadiana lies in Extremadura near Portugal. Its Denominación de Origen, a protected wine designation, has six subzones. Regulations set permitted grape varieties, production areas and the use of subzone names. They also set ageing requirements for reds labelled Crianza, Reserva and Gran Reserva.
