The Producer

In 1994, Juan Antonio Megia and his family acquired a historic winery in Valdepeñas and founded Bodegas J.A. Megía e Hijos S.L. Corcovo is the company's flagship brand, embodying the family's dedication to quality winemaking through tradition and innovation.

The operation combines restored old buildings and caves with modern vinification and fermentation facilities. The modern facilities use the latest technology for control over the processes. Vinification turns grape must into wine, while fermentation is the yeast driven stage that creates alcohol and develops aroma and texture. Control at this stage lets the cellar manage the transformation from must to finished wine.

Place

Valdepeñas is the producer's home, at Calle Magdalena 33 in Ciudad Real. The buildings and caves at the address date from 1884 and have been restored and preserved. The aging cave is dug 13 metres underground into rock and keeps constant humidity and temperature throughout the year. Steady cellar conditions help wine mature at a consistent pace by avoiding large swings in heat and humidity.

Wines

Corcovo covers a Valdepeñas range of red, rosé and white wines. Tempranillo appears in Corcovo Tempranillo, Corcovo Tempranillo Roble, Corcovo Tempranillo Crianza, Corcovo Tempranillo Reserva and Corcovo Tempranillo Rosado. Corcovo Syrah supplies another red wine, while Corcovo Verdejo is the white wine.

The bottle names divide the range by grape, colour and maturation category. Roble, Crianza and Reserva are maturation terms rather than grape varieties. Crianza and Reserva indicate different ageing periods before release, with Reserva the longer category. Oak can contribute spice and a rounder texture during maturation.

Red wine gains tannin from grape skins during fermentation. Rosé and white wine normally use less skin contact, so they carry less tannin. The red Tempranillo and Syrah wines have a different mouthfeel from the Tempranillo Rosado and Verdejo styles.

Final Word

Preserved caves and modern fermentation facilities operate together at the Valdepeñas address. Corcovo spans Tempranillo, Syrah and Verdejo in red, rosé and white styles.
