Alsace

In Alsace, grape names often lead the label, but slope, soil and village matter too. Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir range from dry to late-harvest sweet, shaped by the Vosges rain shadow and 51 named grand cru sites.

In Alsace, the grape name is often the first thing you see on the label. Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Muscat, Sylvaner and Pinot Noir provide a useful starting point, but the slope, village and soil matter just as much.

The region runs between the Vosges and the Rhine, where a dry, sunny growing season meets limestone, granite, sandstone, marl and volcanic rock. Those differences show up in wines ranging from dry Riesling and rich Pinot Gris to fragrant Gewurztraminer, late-harvest sweet wines and Pinot Noir. Its 51 named grand cru sites give more reason to look beyond the grape variety.
