The Producer

Léonard Humbrecht married Geneviève Zind in 1959, creating Domaine Zind-Humbrecht. The Humbrecht family's winegrowing history reaches back to 1620. Olivier Humbrecht, Léonard's son, became the first Frenchman to qualify as Master of Wine in 1989.

At the domaine, Olivier developed a biodynamic regime built on low impact farming, organic composting, restricted yields and hand-tending of the vines. The programme includes native yeasts. Organic certification was awarded to the vineyards in 1998, followed by biodynamic certification in 2002.

Place

The holdings are spread across Turckheim, Hunawihr, Thann, Gueberschwihr and Wintzenheim. Turckheim accounts for 18 hectares, with 6.2 hectares in Hunawihr, 5.5 in Thann, 2.4 in Gueberschwihr and 8.3 in Wintzenheim. This distribution puts separate Alsace places behind the bottles, so grape names and site names appear together in the range.

Wines

The range is organized around Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer, with bottles named for Heimbourg, Goldert Grand Cru, Roche Volcanique and Roche Calcaire. Riesling Heimbourg, Pinot Gris Roche Volcanique, Pinot Gris Roche Calcaire, Pinot Gris Heimbourg and Gewürztraminer Roche Calcaire are 2023 wines; Gewürztraminer Goldert Grand Cru is 2018. Gewürztraminer Roche Calcaire 2023 combines exotic spice, rose and yellow fruit with a fresh, chalky palate and a finish that is nearly dry.

Final Word

Domaine Zind-Humbrecht farms multiple Alsace vineyard locations under certified biodynamic practices and bottles Riesling, Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer.
