Most Swedish vineyards lie in Skåne, just north of the 55th parallel. Many are planted on low coastal land, where soils can shift sharply over short distances, from flint-rich clay over calcareous sand to light sand. In the northwest, surrounding water can lower frost risk. Spring comes a little earlier in the southeast, though cold air can collect in its valleys, so some growers use gas burners or air-moving equipment to protect buds. The region's wines include crisp whites, mild reds and rosés.
