The regions of Chile
Choose a region to read about its wines and explore the smaller growing areas within it.
- 01Aconcagua5 producersAconcagua is a wine region in Chile, between the Pacific and the Andes. Warm inland vineyards around Los Andes and San Felipe grow Cabernet Sauvignon and Carmenère for ripe, intense reds. Cooler western areas grow Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, so location within the region matters as well as the grape.
- 02AtacamaNo producers listed yetChile's desert wine region of Atacama is divided into the Copiapó and Huasco valleys. Pacific fog reaches Huasco's vineyards, bringing moisture to an otherwise arid setting. The region grows grapes for the spirit pisco as well as still wine, including Sauvignon Blanc.
- 03AustralNo producers listed yetAustral is a cool wine region in far-southern Chile, extending from Cautin through Osorno towards Chiloé. Vineyards grow alongside cattle farms near the southern limits of grape growing. Riesling and Chardonnay are important white grapes, while Pinot Noir makes reds that can have earthy, herbal and dark-cherry flavours.
- 04Central Valley26 producersChile's Central Valley runs from Metropolitan Santiago to Maule and includes Maipo, Rapel, Curicó and Maule. The name Valle Central covers this broad area. A more specific place name helps distinguish, for example, Cabernet Sauvignon from Maipo from a wine made further south in Maule.
- 05CoquimboNo producers listed yetThe Elqui and Limarí valleys are part of Coquimbo, a Chilean wine region. Elqui lies at the edge of the Atacama Desert, with high vineyards and thin, rocky soils. Limarí has cooler, foggy coastal mornings and limestone soils, and grows Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. Both valleys also grow Syrah for red wine.
- 06Other producers2 producersThese producers are in Chile, with no more specific region shown.
- 07South5 producersChile's Southern Region comprises the wine valleys of Itata, Bío Bío and Malleco. It is cooler and wetter than the country's main northern vineyard areas. Itata has old vines of the red grapes Cinsault and País and white Muscat; Bío Bío and Malleco grow aromatic white grapes and Pinot Noir.
