Chile's Southern Region is cooler and wetter than the country's main northern wine areas. Itata, Bío Bío and Malleco are its three commonly named valleys. Cloud cover is substantial, soils are mainly volcanic in origin, and the southern valleys can receive up to 50 inches of rain a year.

Itata, the northernmost valley, has some of Chile's earliest vineyards and old vines of Cinsault, País and Muscat. Bío Bío's rain and cold nights suit aromatic whites and Pinot Noir; its wines can show firm acidity and mineral-backed aromatics. Farther south, Malleco is also known for aromatic whites and cool-climate Pinot Noir. Across the region, wines are associated with naturally fresh acidity.
