Vinho Verde sits in Minho and northwestern Portugal, where Atlantic humidity shapes the wines. Its name means "green wine," referring to youth rather than colour. Red wines brought the region its early fame, though white wines now lead its international profile.

Nine subregions bring different soils and microclimates into the picture. Rainier Lima, Cávado and Ave favour aromatic whites from Loureiro, Arinto and Trajadura. Further inland, warmer and sunnier conditions help Azal and Avesso ripen. In Monção and Melgaço, warmer, drier summers suit Alvarinho, which can make expressive wines that age well.

Alvarinho, Arinto, Azal, Avesso, Loureiro and Trajadura are the main white grapes. Traditional bottles are often young, crisp and sometimes gently fizzy, with lime and nectarine in the spritzy style. Broad blends still matter, alongside single-variety and single-vineyard wines. Rosé and red wines are made here too.
