Friuli-Venezia Giulia is Italy's far northeastern wine region, bordering Austria and Slovenia. Its hills, plains, Adriatic shores and rocky plateaus produce very different wines.
Collio and Brda were one wine region before the postwar border divided them. Here, Friulano can show differences between growing locations, while Ribolla Gialla appears in fresh, skin-contact and sparkling styles. Friuli Grave's gravelly plain favors fresh whites such as Ribolla Gialla and Pinot Grigio. Aquileia produces fresh, saline whites and deep, full reds. In Carso, limestone, shallow red earth and bora exposure give wines a mineral, intense and savory character. Vitovska, Malvasia Istriana and Terrano are its signature grapes, while Refosco and Schioppettino are associated with high-acid red wines.
The DOC areas include Collio, Friuli Colli Orientali, Friuli Grave, Friuli Aquileia, Carso and Prosecco. Ramandolo, Colli Orientali del Friuli Picolit and Rosazzo are the region's leading DOCG areas.
