Friuli-Venezia Giulia's vineyards span hills, plains, Adriatic shores and rocky plateaus. Collio and Brda were one wine region before the postwar border divided them. Here, wines made from the white grape Friulano can vary between growing locations. Ribolla Gialla, another white grape, is used for fresh whites, sparkling wines and wines fermented in contact with their grape skins. Friuli Grave's gravelly plain grows white grapes such as Ribolla Gialla and Pinot Grigio. Aquileia produces fresh, saline whites and deep, full reds. Carso has limestone, shallow red earth and exposure to the bora wind. Its wines can be intense and savoury; local grapes include Vitovska, Malvasia Istriana and Terrano. Refosco and Schioppettino make red wines with marked acidity. The region's DOC appellations include Collio, Friuli Colli Orientali, Friuli Grave, Friuli Aquileia, Carso and Prosecco. The Prosecco DOC also extends into Veneto. Ramandolo, Colli Orientali del Friuli Picolit and Rosazzo carry the DOCG designation, another Italian appellation category.
