Styria

Styria, or Steiermark, lies between the Alps and the Adriatic, where steep vineyards and a rainy, sheltered climate create many local conditions. Sauvignon Blanc leads in Südsteiermark, Traminer has a strong presence in Süd-Oststeiermark, and Weststeiermark is known for high-acid pink Schilcher.

Styria, known in German as Steiermark, lies between the Alps and the Adriatic. Its temperate, wind-sheltered and rainy climate allows for many microclimates, and some vineyard slopes are so steep they must be worked on foot. Styrian wines are often marked by fragrance, juiciness, spice and minerality.

Südsteiermark is closely tied to Sauvignon Blanc, with styles that run from fresh and fragrant to more weighty. In Süd-Oststeiermark, or Vulkanland, warmer conditions suit Traminer, while cooler nights retain freshness. Weststeiermark is the home of Schilcher, the high-acid pink wine made from Blauer Wildbacher. Schilcher also appears as sparkling wine and was first recorded in a wine book in 1580.
