Steiermark is the German name for Styria, the wine area between the Alps and the Adriatic. Its climate is generally temperate, wind-sheltered and rainy, with enough local variation to create many microclimates. Some of its vineyards are steep enough to require work on foot. Südsteiermark is associated with Sauvignon Blanc, from fresh, fragrant wines to weightier examples. The warmer Süd-Oststeiermark, also called Vulkanland, is known for Traminer and freshness retained by cool nights. Weststeiermark follows the Alpine foothills and is identified with high-acid Schilcher from Blauer Wildbacher.
