South Australia makes almost half of Australia's annual wine, but the state name covers very different growing conditions. Warm Barossa, maritime McLaren Vale, cool Adelaide Hills and hot Riverland all sit within it.
The smaller name on the label tells you more. Barossa is a zone containing Barossa Valley and Eden Valley, with High Eden as a subregion. Eden Valley is the cooler, higher-altitude Barossa region and is especially associated with Riesling. Barossa Shiraz is generally full-bodied and ripe-fruited, with plush tannin, while Barossa Riesling is known for lime character and can age for a decade or more.
Clare Valley is a good name to know for dry, high-acid Riesling, as well as Shiraz with blackberry, spice and mint. McLaren Vale's maritime Mediterranean setting and varied soils suit many expressions of Shiraz and Grenache. Adelaide Hills is among Australia's highest, coolest and wettest wine regions, with aromatic Sauvignon Blanc. Coonawarra is especially associated with Cabernet Sauvignon and its narrow strip of terra rossa over limestone.
