Hungary

Hungary’s map runs from Tokaj and Eger to Lake Balaton, Pannon and the Danube. Furmint gives the north and east a sharp reference point, while Kékfrankos and Cabernet find warmer ground farther south. Volcanic places, lake influence and continental distance keep the styles moving.

The regions of Hungary

Choose a region to read its guide, then move closer through its named subregions.

  1. 01Duna1 producerCreated in 2006 from Csongrád, Hajós-Baja and Kunság, Duna covers a large share of Hungary's vineyards. Sandy Kunság, dry Csongrád and the loess-and-sand country of Hajós-Baja give the region a wide range of conditions, with Ezerjó, Kadarka and Kékfrankos among its useful names to know.
  2. 02Eger1 producerEger lies in northeastern Hungary between the Mátra and Bükk Mountains. Its cool conditions and varied soils give wines lively acidity and restrained tannin. Egri Bikavér, Egri Csillag and Kékfrankos offer a useful introduction, while Bükk and Mátra follow distinct paths within Upper Hungary.
  3. 03Lake Balaton3 producersLake Balaton's six wine districts share Olaszrizling, though their vineyard conditions differ. Northern marl, red sandstone and volcanic soils contrast with the warm loess of the south, while the lake softens summer conditions and increases humidity.
  4. 04Other producers3 producersThese producers are listed here with no more specific region shown.
  5. 05Pannon1 producerPannon groups four wine-growing areas: Pécs, Villány, Szekszárd and Tolna. Hills, sunshine and varied soils set the scene for a region where red wine predominates, though Pécs brings a fresh white-wine contrast.
  6. 06Tokaj7 producersTokaj lies among volcanic slopes and wetlands where the Bodrog meets the Tisza. River humidity and sunny mornings help aszú berries develop, while Furmint, Hárslevelű and Sárgamuskotály also shape dry, slightly sweet and sweet white wines.
  7. 07Upper Pannon1 producerUpper Pannon brings together Etyek-Buda, Mór, Neszmély, Pannonhalma and Sopron. Fresh, lively whites with high acidity run through much of the region, while the slightly warmer area around Lake Fertő gives Sopron room for fuller reds, including Kékfrankos.
