Pannon

Pannon groups four wine-growing areas: Pécs, Villány, Szekszárd and Tolna. Hills, sunshine and varied soils set the scene for a region where red wine predominates, though Pécs brings a fresh white-wine contrast.

Pannon brings together Pécs, Villány, Szekszárd and Tolna in hilly country between the Danube, Drava and Lake Balaton. Its vineyards include the southern slopes of the Villány and Mecsek ranges, where a Mediterranean mesoclimate, abundant sunshine and shelter from cold northern winds are part of the picture. Red wine outnumbers white here.

The soils shift from Mecsek limestone to Villány loess and loam, with clay-rich hillsides elsewhere. Pécs makes bright Chardonnay and Irsai Olivér whites, while Villány and Szekszárd are known for richer, full-bodied reds with firm or supple tannins.
