Lake Balaton is a wine region in Hungary with six wine districts linked by Olaszrizling, though the wines are far from uniform. Northern vineyards range across calcareous marl, red Permian sandstone and volcanic soils, while the south is mainly warm loess. Balatonboglár, on the southern shore, makes fruit-forward wines with concentration and drinkability, including ageable reds. The lake softens summer conditions and raises humidity. In Balatonfüred-Csopak, Olaszrizling and Kékfrankos appear as village and single-vineyard wines. BalatonBor is the region's Olaszrizling-based brand, while village and vineyard classifications offer a more site-specific view.
