Trentino-Alto Adige

In northern Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige combines Alto Adige/Südtirol and Trentino. Bolzano is associated with powerful Lagrein, while dry Val Venosta and the Isarco Valley favour different northern varieties. Piana Rotaliana centres on Teroldego, and Trentino also makes classic-method Trentodoc.

Trentino-Alto Adige brings together Alto Adige/Südtirol in the north and Trentino in the south. Alto Adige vineyards range from about 200 to 1,000 metres. Cool nights and mountain winds help keep the wines fresh and fruity. Bolzano is associated with powerful Lagrein, while dry Val Venosta favours Pinot Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Noir. The Isarco Valley is closely associated with Kerner, Sylvaner and Müller-Thurgau.

In Piana Rotaliana, Teroldego ripens fully. The wines are deeply coloured and medium-bodied, with acidity, moderate tannin, red fruit, violets and sometimes bitter almond. Nosiola can dry on straw mats for at least six months before it is pressed for Vino Santo, an intensely flavoured sweet wine. Trentodoc follows the classic method, with secondary fermentation in bottle, riddling and disgorgement. Vineyard altitude affects ripening and grape acidity.
