Danubian Plain is a Bulgarian wine region of low plains, hills and plateaux. It has a moderate continental climate with hot, dry summers, while chernozem and grey forest soils formed on loess are characteristic of its PGI area.
Three published zones organise the region. Vidin, Mihailovgrad and Vratsa lie in the northwest; Suhindol, Pleven and Veliko Tarnovo form the central zone; and Ruse, Svishtov and Nikopol belong to the Danubian zone. PGI Danube Plain is the broad protected name used for wine.
The local details are where the region becomes more distinct. Novo Selo is reviving Gamza, and Vratsa brings together Vrachanski Misket and Rubin. Lozitsa Cabernet Sauvignon is ruby red with dried-fruit bouquet notes. Ruse, Pleven and Suhindol make fruity reds and crisp whites, while Lyaskovets has a sparkling wine tradition.
