Moldova

Moldova’s wine map is organised around Codru, Ștefan Vodă and Valul lui Traian. Codru’s wooded centre, the warmer southeast and the southern steppe create a clear regional progression, with native varieties and international grapes sharing the landscape.

The regions of Moldova

Choose a region to read its guide, then move closer through its named subregions.

  1. 01Codru1 producerCodru is a central Moldovan wine region shaped by valleys, ridges and mostly gentle slopes. White grapes make up about 63% of its PGI vineyard area, and whites and sparkling wines are a particular focus. Codru on a label names a protected geographical indication, not a grape variety.

  3. 03Stefan Voda2 producersȘtefan Vodă lies in southeastern Moldova, where the PGI includes the Botna River Meadow, Nistru River Terraces and South Moldova Plain. Dry and semi-dry reds, whites and rosés are made from grapes including Rara Neagră, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay and Merlot.
  4. 04Valul Lui TraianNo producers listed yetIn southern Moldova, Valul lui Traian includes Bugeac Plain, Tigheci Forests and Prut River Terraces. Hills, valleys and chernozem soils make for varied growing conditions, while Black Sea influence shapes its temperate-continental climate. The PGI covers dry, rosé, red, sparkling, overripe-grape, raisin-grape and liqueur wines.
