Valul lui Traian lies in southern Moldova, spanning seven districts and about 43,203 hectares of vineyards. Its name is linked to Trajan's Wall, a name recorded in sources in 1489. Hills, deep valleys and slopes run across a region where chernozem soils dominate.
Bugeac Plain, Tigheci Forests and Prut River Terraces are separate sub-regions with distinct soil and climate conditions. The temperate-continental climate is influenced by the Black Sea. Breezes and shade from the Tigheci Forest moderate the region's high sunshine and temperatures, while Tigheci Forests is especially favourable for sparkling wine.
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Saperavi and Fetească Neagră are important red grapes. Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Muscat Ottonel lead the whites. The PGI permits dry, rosé, red, sparkling, overripe-grape, raisin-grape and liqueur wines. Liqueur wines are made in Ciumai, Trifești, Borceag and Slobozia Mare. Whites can show nutmeg, dried fruit, jam and honey, while reds can show plum and chocolate.
