Ștefan Vodă lies in southeastern Moldova. Its PGI covers about 10,000 hectares across the Botna River Meadow, Nistru River Terraces and South Moldova Plain. The Dniester, Botna and Cogâlnic shape the region's water system, while loam and clay are the main parent-rock materials. Black grapes account for about 57% of the PGI wine-product area.
Dry and semi-dry reds, whites and rosés are made here from grapes including Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and the local red Rara Neagră. Reds commonly show sour cherry, blackcurrant, raspberry, prune and spice, with a full, velvety palate. Whites are fruity and mineral, while rosés can bring peach, apricot, raspberry and strawberry. Rara Neagră has red and black berry aromas with an astringent edge.
At Leuntea, sixteenth-century tunnels are still used as wine cellars. Wines from the area were known abroad from the nineteenth century, and inherited classic practices now sit alongside modern methods.
