Virginia & Southeast brings together Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee, with 16 named appellations. Virginia's modern wine industry began taking root in the late 1970s and grew from a small group of wineries to nearly 300. Viognier and Chardonnay lead its whites, while Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Bordeaux-style blends are important reds. Norton adds a distinct American grape to the mix.
North Carolina runs from Appalachian High Country vineyards to Yadkin Valley, the state's first AVA. Georgia is closely associated with muscadine. Tennessee wineries use European grapes alongside muscadine and Chambourcin for dry reds, crisp whites and fruit-forward blends. Nine Lakes of East Tennessee is a newly recognized AVA with a mountain-lake identity.
