New York, Connecticut and Massachusetts make up this northeastern wine grouping. Winter cold and frost shape grape growing across the area, where vinifera, native grapes and cold-hardy hybrids all have a place.

New York is the largest wine presence, led by the Finger Lakes and Long Island. Early European vines struggled, and Concord and Delaware became important alternatives. Vinifera plantings have grown in recent decades. The Finger Lakes is closely associated with Riesling and other cool-climate whites, often marked by high acidity, lighter body, lower alcohol and mineral notes. Cabernet Franc is an important red grape in eastern New York, especially on Long Island. Connecticut's vineyards are spread among small towns, while coastal Massachusetts combines maritime conditions with granite and glacial-outwash soils that can bring ripe fruit and bright acidity.
