Mid-Atlantic

The Mid-Atlantic brings together New Jersey, Maryland, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Grapes and wine styles shift with local conditions: New Jersey's coastal plain supports a broad range of varieties, while Pennsylvania, western Maryland and West Virginia each balance ripening potential with cold risk.

The Mid-Atlantic groups wine areas with different answers to the same question: which grapes will ripen reliably here? Pennsylvania's Lehigh Valley grows Chambourcin, Cabernet Franc, Vidal and Riesling. In Lancaster Valley, limestone and clay provide drainage while holding water, and hybrids grow alongside vinifera. The valley became Pennsylvania's first official AVA in 1982.

New Jersey moves from Pinot Noir and Riesling in the north to Sangiovese and Barbera in the south. Its flat Outer Coastal Plain is moderated by the Atlantic and Delaware Bay. Western Maryland's mountain sites suit early-ripening, cold-hardy Marquette, as well as Valvin Muscat. In West Virginia, growers work with European, American and hybrid grapes, with cold risk, soils and growing-season length all shaping the choice.
