In Loei, winegrowing centres on Phu Ruea in northeast Thailand. The Phurua Highlands lie along the Loei River near the Laos border, at about 600 to 800 metres. Their cooler conditions and fertile soil suit grape cultivation. Château de Loei began in 1991, with Chenin Blanc and Syrah as its principal varieties. At Phu Ruea Highland Winery, the vineyard grows Shiraz, Chenin Blanc and Colombard. Visitors can taste wine and learn about harvest, fermentation and ageing. Harvest usually runs from January to March, while November to February is the cooler season to visit.
