Khao Yai makes wine in a tropical part of Thailand, outside the usual temperate wine belt. Seasonal rain comes with the monsoon, but the mountains have a cooler rhythm. December and January can be dry and windy, with temperatures below 10°C. Mountain nights may stay cold from October to February, and March to May is cooler here than across much of Thailand.
Representative vineyard sites sit at 350 to 380 metres above sea level. GranMonte's Asoke Valley estate is at 350 metres on gentle slopes and uses integrated pest management with close microclimate monitoring. Chenin Blanc is a major regional planting, joined by Merlot, Malbec, Barbera, Marsanne and Roussanne. PB Valley dates one of the region's first large-scale professional wineries to 1989 and harvests grapes from late January to mid-March.
