Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai is a grape-growing area in northern Thailand, known mainly for table grapes. Winegrowing is more recent: a highland programme in Mae On was planted in 2025. Growers work with tropical heat, humidity and monsoon rain, without the cold-winter dormancy of temperate vineyards.

Chiang Mai's established grape growing is mainly for the table. Wine grapes are a more recent addition. In Mae On, a highland wine programme planted in 2025 is still developing, with elevation moderating the tropical growing conditions. Heat, humidity and monsoon rain require different vineyard practices from those used in temperate regions. Vines do not have a conventional cold-winter dormancy. Chiang Mai is also among the vineyard locations in Monsoon Valley's Thai network.
