Chiang Mai

In northern Thailand, Chiang Mai is known more for table grapes than established wine production. Mae On's highland wine programme, planted in 2025, is still developing. Growers work with tropical heat, humidity and monsoon rain rather than a conventional winter dormancy.

Chiang Mai's established grape culture is mainly table grapes. Wine grapes are a newer part of the picture. In Mae On, a highland wine programme planted in 2025 is still developing, with elevation helping to moderate tropical conditions as the fruit ripens.

Heat, humidity and monsoon rain set the terms for grape growing here. Vines do not receive a conventional cold-winter dormancy, so growers need tropical viticulture techniques. Chiang Mai is also among the vineyard locations in Monsoon Valley's Thai network.
