Cederberg is a wine area within Olifants River, with vineyards at 950 to 1,100 metres above sea level. Its cool Mediterranean climate differs from the coastal conditions elsewhere in the region. Weathered shale and slate cover the hillsides and high mountain slopes, while higher-clay soils are considered suitable for red cultivars. The isolated area is reported to have little disease, reducing the need for chemical intervention. Cederberg wines are associated with fine-grained tannins and greater ageing potential.
