Olifants River runs through the northern Western Cape, from Lutzville in the north to Citrusdal Valley in the south. It is semi-arid, with the Atlantic helping shape a marked temperature gradient. Vredendal is hot and exceptionally dry, receiving about 6.5 inches of rain a year. The mountains around Citrusdal receive roughly three times as much.

Along the river, alluvial soils hold water well. Higher gravelly slopes are associated with wines of greater mineral character and complexity. Olifants River is the regional Wine of Origin name, with Citrusdal Mountain and Lutzville Valley as districts. Koekenaap and Bamboes Bay sit within Lutzville Valley.

The region shifts noticeably from place to place. Lutzville has Atlantic breezes, sunny days and crisp evenings, while Cederberg brings cool Mediterranean conditions at elevation. Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage and Shiraz are the main inland reds, which tend to be richer and fuller-bodied than cooler coastal styles. Large-scale production sits alongside quality export wines and boutique estates in the mountains and along the coast.
