The Producer

The Dwarsrivier farm covers 5,500 hectares, with 74 hectares under vine. Cederberg Private Cellar is based there, and David Nieuwoudt is the winemaker and owner. He represents the fifth generation of the Nieuwoudt family; his daughter Emma represents the sixth generation.

The present Nieuwoudt family moved to Dwarsrivier in 1893. David returned to the farm where he grew up in 1997 and took over the farm and winemaking reins from Oom Flippie.

Place

At high elevation, cooler conditions can slow ripening and help grapes retain acidity. The vineyards at Cederberg Private Cellar lie between 950 and 1,100 metres above sea level in a cool Mediterranean climate, rather than a maritime or coastal one.

The hillsides and high mountain slopes have weathered shale or slate. Clay rich soil suits red cultivars, while granite derived soils and sandstone are also present. The farm forms part of the Greater Cederberg Biodiversity Corridor. Of its land, 5,200 hectares are under conservation and about 300 hectares serve farming, the holiday resort and staff housing.

Wines

The portfolio contains four collections: Cederberg, Ghost Corner, Five Generations and Longaví. Five Generations is the flagship range, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc sourced from single vineyards. The top barrels are selected, and a limited quantity of each wine is released every year.

Cederberg Merlot Shiraz 2023 is a red blend from the Cederberg range. It has soft juicy tannins, broad flavours, refreshing acidity and a lingering spicy fruit finish.

Ghost Corner The Bowline 2023 is a white wine in the Ghost Corner range, tied to the coastal area around Cape Agulhas near Elim. It is very fresh, with barrel influence and notes of green apple, blackcurrant leaf, Galia melon, gooseberry, white flowers, herbs and grilled lemon.

Final Word

Cederberg Private Cellar has a coastal Ghost Corner range around Cape Agulhas near Elim. Five Generations is the flagship range, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Chenin Blanc from single vineyards.
