Southern Slovakia

Southern Slovakia's vineyards lie in the Danube and Hron lowlands. Loess hills occur in the east and south; Danube sediments, gravel and sandy gravel lie beneath the west. The region has warm growing conditions. Rizling vlašský, Rizling rýnsky, Burgundské biele and Chardonnay are among the principal white grapes. Cabernet Sauvignon and Frankovka modrá lead the reds. Alongside dry wines, producers make sweet wines from late-harvested grapes, raisined grapes, frozen grapes and grapes dried on straw. The region has eight wine-growing areas and 114 communes, including Štúrovský, Strekovský and Hurbanovský.
