Southern Slovakia sits in the Danube and Hron lowlands, Slovakia's warmest wine region. The growing season lasts about two weeks longer than elsewhere in the country, with an average temperature of 18.3°C and 3,350 hours of sunshine. Loess hills shape the east and south; Danube sediments, gravel and sandy gravel lie beneath the west.
Rizling vlašský, Rizling rýnsky, Burgundské biele and Chardonnay are among the principal white grapes. Cabernet Sauvignon and Frankovka modrá lead the reds. The region makes dry varietal whites as well as late-harvest, raisin, ice and straw wines. Štúrovský, Strekovský and Hurbanovský are prominent within its eight viticultural areas and 114 communes.
