The Little Carpathians region lies in southwestern Slovakia. Celtic finds point to grape growing in the sixth and seventh centuries BC, and Romans established vineyards on these slopes more than two thousand years ago. Its wines were later served at the imperial court in Vienna and on the Titanic. Soils vary from stony clay and sand deposited by streams to Morava river sediments and windblown sands in the southwest. The region produces still wines and traditional-method sparkling wines, whose second fermentation takes place in bottle. Malokarpatská is a protected designation of origin. Its name can take masculine, feminine and neuter forms in Slovak.
