Eastern Slovakia runs across the mild slopes of the Vihorlat range and the rolling edge of the East Slovakian lowland. Four viticultural areas and 89 winegrowing communes grow a wide set of varieties. Müller-Thurgau and Rizling vlašský are established whites, while Frankovka is a blue variety. Sauvignon, Veltlínske zelené, Tramín červený, Cabernet Sauvignon and Svätovavrinecké also appear in the region, which makes both white and red wines.
Východoslovenská is the protected geographical designation for wines from the region. Labels can also indicate grape ripeness at harvest: Kabinetné requires at least 19 kg of sugar per 100 litres of must, Neskorý zber 21 kg, and Výber z hrozna 23 kg.
Slovakia's Tokaj area is separate from the broader Eastern Slovakian wine region. It lies in Lower Zemplín, on the southern slopes of the Zemplén hills, and belongs to a wine region that extends mostly into Hungary. Its grapes are used for natural sweet wines.
